Real Knee Surgery Patient Reviews
Maria Quiban of FoxLA underwent her meniscus repair surgery at the Knee Surgery Center of Excellence at La Peer Health Systems, and gave a testimonial on the experience.
Dr. Patel is an excellent orthopedic surgeon. Each time I’ve seen him, he’s been able to diagnose my problem immediately . I first saw him in 2009 for what turned out to be an inflamed bursa in my shoulder. He told me to take Aleve (along with very clearly telling me to take it with a meal and to drink PLENTY of water) and gave me a prescription for physical therapy. The terrible pain and immobility I was suffering vanished completely within six weeks. Then just over a week ago, he performed arthroscopic surgery for a torn meniscus in my knee and within two days, I was able to walk a mile with NO pain.
Dr. Patel is absolutely TOP NOTCH! And, he is caring, patient, and kind. We’re lucky in LA to have some of the finest surgeons in the world. Dr. Patel is one of them.

I visited Dr. Millstein after dealing with 2 months of moderate to severe pain in my knee. I am NOT one who runs to a doctor for every little thing, so you know I was suffering if I actually made a doctor appointment.
Thankfully, it turned out that I didn’t have any big injury to my knee. X-rays and an MRI came out great, and Dr. Millstein told me it would just get better on its own Thankfully, slowly and surely, it has been improving.
But here is the one thing that made me want to write a review. My father is a retired orthopedic surgeon, and he was obviously concerned about my knee… and equally concerned that I was going to see some quack (literally, my father looked over all of Dr. Millstein’s criteria before he let me go to him!). Which was fine, but my father also insisted that he actually speak to Dr. Millstein on the phone. I was kind of mortified to ask that…. I’m sure Dr. Millstein is a busy guy, and I hated the thought of saying to him, “Hi, I’m a 39 year old woman, but can you please call my Daddy on the phone?” Unbelievably, after I mentioned in passing that my father is a doctor, Dr. Millstein offered to call him WITHOUT ME HAVING TO ASK! His rationale was, “If my daughter was seeing some other doctor, I would want to talk to them!” So awesome that he was so perceptive and insightful!
I hope I never have a reason to see him again, but I would highly recommend Dr. Millstein to anyone. I have already sent one friend to him, and I hope my review will help convince more people in need of a great orthopedic to check him out!

“My doctor was so helpful, the day of arrival I had a massive migraine and felt horrible. She was extremely helpful and accommodating. The staff also made sure they got me into a bed and finish my paper work in bed while I rested!”
“Wonderful! I would definitely come here again. I had a procedure at UCLA recently and wished I was at LaPeer.”
After having been misdiagnosed by three different doctors I spent two years in severe pain with limited mobility and acute tendonitis in my right arm. After describing my symptoms and an examination, Dr. Millstein immediately said I had a torn rotator cuff and ordered an MRI. His diagnosis was perfect, and then, rather than send me to surgery he suggested starting with a conservative approach using physical therapy for both the shoulder and a torn knee cartilage. I was not convinced that it would help, but even now, a year after having completed the therapy, the tendonitis is gone, I have almost full mobility in my arm and the knee problems are no longer bothering me.
I cannot recommend Dr. Millstein highly enough, and truly appreciate the time he took to make a thorough and accurate assessment and his avoiding surgery unless absolutely necessary.

Dr. Millstein and Samina,
Our warmest thanks to both of you for your courtesy, competence and professionalism. We feel so very fortunate to have been referred to you by Dr. Parker.

“Dr. Patel implanted a wonderful new knee on july 5. Before the operation I had great difficulty walking even a few steps as my arthritic knee had progressively become mu;ch worse.
I thought that perhaps I was too old to get a knee replacement, but Dr. Patel assured me that one’s state of health is more important than age. He was very encouraging and allayed all my fears. I shall be everlastingly grateful to him for giving me back the ability to walk as much as I want…to go up and down stairs…and to enjoy my life. By the way , I am 91.”

As for the reviewer Diana M., it does seem as though the low-star rating was as a result of trying to be as non-invasive as possible, which is completely understandable and which, in the case of my torn meniscus, I was trying to avoid as well. But, sometimes our bodies just need good old Western style surgery and, if that’s the case, Dr. Patel is absolutely TOP NOTCH! And, he is caring, patient, and kind. We’re lucky in LA to have some of the finest surgeons in the world. Dr. Patel is one of them.”

“My son was having surgery (a 30min procedure) and while I was in the waiting room they made sure to comfort me, which I appreciated greatly.”
“We saw Dr. Weiss for my 2 y.o.’s broken arm in December 2012 . He was fantastic with her and was very descriptive and willing to part with tons of information, which can be very comforting when your child is hurt.
Three months later, my daughter fell off a chair (she is clearly clumsy and this comes from my wife’s blood line I’m guessing) and this happened on a Saturday morning. I called his office and explained the situation to his answering service. In the meantime we began driving to Children’s Hospital.
While waiting in the hospital, Dr. Weiss called 20 minutes later and was clearly in his car with his wife and children. I told him what had happened and he told me to immediately leave the hospital and meet him at his office in Beverly Hills. We did.
We arrived before him and when the elevator opened he and his 7 y.o. daughter greeted us with a stuffed animal. It was pretty amazing.
He took x-rays and she had indeed broken her elbow. Dr. Weiss showed me the x-rays and explained in detail how it broke and what needed to be done to re-set the bone. He res-set it with my daughter sitting on my wife’s lap which was not easy for anyone. He then applied a splint.
Dr. Weiss then took another x-ray to show us exactly what resetting the bone had
done. It was pretty comforting to see the difference he had made. Had we remained at Children’s we most likely would have been there all day and probably would have ended up with pins in our daughters elbow.
Dr. Weiss is an absolute professional and I couldn’t recommend a doctor more highly…”

“Andrew Weiss is AH-MAZE-ING. If you are lucky enough to get in, you are in great hands.
I stumbled into this office by mistake. Long story, but I’m convinced it was fate. Everyone was super nice from the nurses to the receptionists.
Dr Weiss has an amazing bedside manner, is knowledgeable, and attentive.”

Surgery is never fun, but this place was a lot better than any experience I have had in the past. I got my tonsils removed here earlier this year with Dr Larian (who I also love). The nurses were very nice, the facilities themselves are gorgeous (like a hotel!), my anesthesiologist was so nice he even called me the next day to check on me. I think his name was Dr. Johnson.
One of my good friends had to get ACL surgery last month and I referred him to La Peer. He saw Dr Millstein, and also had a great experience! I guess ACL is a bigger surgery so they kept him for longer. He even had a private room with a TV and everything.
If you need surgery, this is the place to do it. So much more private and better overall than a big hospital (not to mention safer as you aren’t exposed to all of those hospital germs – ewww!).
If you want to see more about my surgery I made a video diary, you can check it out on youtube or here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQasqawnlIo.
